Simple Christmas activities for preschoolers
Published 2026-10-18 · Updated 2026-10-18
Preschool Christmas can stay secular. Skip nativity scenes and church crafts. Use trees, cookies, gifts, bells, and paper snow. A workable set is a paper chain, cookie stirring, wrapping practice, ornament sorting, a cotton-ball tree, a bell freeze song, a touch-and-guess bag, window snowflakes, a floor delivery route, counting drawn lights, and a quiet coloring page of a tree or a cookie.
Secular jobs for home or class
NAEYC frames holiday learning as part of ordinary life: cooking, eating, playing, and exploring. The same page suggests letting a child help with a big job, cooking together, adding a little math to talk, reading together, staying active, and singing. None of that requires a religious picture.
- Paper chain. Cut red and green strips. The adult staples or tapes. The child chooses the next color.
- Cookie stirring. A child pours pre-measured cups and stirs. That is the "big job." An adult handles the oven.
- Wrapping practice. Tape a small box. The goal is the tape, not a neat corner.
- Ornament sort. Paper circles in two colors go into two bowls. Name the colors as you go.
- Cotton-ball tree. Glue cotton on a green triangle. Add a paper star if you want one.
- Bell freeze song. Shake a bell, then freeze when it stops. Play is simple and complex, and a stop-and-go song is the games-with-rules kind.
- Touch-and-guess bag. Hide a spoon, a mitten, and a block. No tiny parts.
- Window snowflakes. Fold paper and let the child tear, not cut, if scissors are new.
- Floor delivery route. Paper parcels travel from the couch to the table. A red hat is optional; the route works without Santa.
- Count drawn lights on a tree sketch. More counting sits in counting activities for preschoolers.
- Quiet coloring of a tree, a stocking, a bell, or a cookie, for the child who wants out of the noise.
- A song you already know, sung while you tidy the scraps. NAEYC lists singing among the holiday ideas above.
Kitchen, wrapping, and a tree corner
Put the messy jobs on one side of the room and the quiet page on the other. Cookie stirring and wrapping can share a table if an adult stays there. The cotton-ball tree and the snowflakes can move to the floor.
If the group is large, run the bell song first so bodies move before hands get sticky. The CDC says children 3 to 5 should be active throughout the day. A freeze song is a small piece of that, not the whole day.
A classroom that wants October ideas in the same style can use Halloween activities for preschoolers. Hand work beyond tape and tearing is in fine motor activities for preschoolers.
What to watch around decorations
If you put up a fresh-cut tree, the American Academy of Pediatrics says to place it away from fireplaces and radiators and keep the stand filled with water. Secure battery compartments on lights, flameless candles, and musical ornaments. Those items can hide button batteries and lithium coin batteries, which can cause life-threatening injuries if swallowed.
When gifts arrive, check toy and game labels for recommended ages. The label can warn you about choking hazards. Keep hot food and liquids away from the edges of counters and tables.
Printed pages when the room is loud
The Christmas Coloring Set holds 36 coloring pages and 9 activity pages, grouped by level so you can print one level at a time. Its levels are Big & Bold 2-16, A Bit More 17-31, Little Scene 32-46. It uses separate PDFs for US Letter and A4. Its pictures are Santa Claus, Reindeer, Christmas Tree, Wrapped Present, Christmas Stocking, Gingerbread Cookie, Santa Sleigh, Christmas Bells, Milk and Cookies, Gingerbread House, Christmas Puppy and Christmas Girl. They are not drawn by a human artist. The Christmas Coloring Set is $3.00.
The list above does not depend on that download. One limit of this advice: it is secular play for home or class, not a religious observance and not a school program.

What are some good activities for Christmas?
With preschoolers, stir cookie dough, sort paper ornaments, practice wrapping, and shake bells for a freeze song. Skip any scene you do not want in a classroom.
What are some fun activities for Christmas Day?
Open one gift slowly, deliver paper parcels along a floor route, and color a tree or cookie while adults handle the kitchen.
What are some good coloring sheets for the holidays?
A tree, a stocking, a bell, or a cookie gives a child a quiet job when the room is loud. Pick the least detailed page for the youngest hands.
